During my Spring 2022 semester at the University of Rhode Island, I received an email informing me that I was selected to be a 2022 Ernest F. NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Hollings Scholar. Through this program, I receive a $19,000 scholarship for my undergraduate studies and have the opportunity to participate in a paid ($7,000) research internship at a NOAA facility over the summer of 2023.
During the Fall 2022 semester, after a lot of scholarship/internship paperwork, I gained access to the NOAA internships site where I could explore all of the NOAA internships that were available to me. There were over 500 to apply to. Now, granted, some of them where old, and some of them were only for graduate students but thats still a lot of choices. After a couple days of searching, I narrowed it down to about 6 internships that I applied too. I got interviews with 5 total.
I am very excited to announce that I have been given the opportunity to conduct my summer 2023 NOAA Internship in Saipan, The Northern Mariana Islands as a "2023 CNMI Coral Restoration Scholar", where I will be studying the retention of coral larval seed beads. During a study abroad at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, I obtained an AAUS Science Diver Qualification which I will be unitizing in Saipan during the duration of my research.
To be given this wonderful internship and have the opportunity to travel halfway across the world to conduct research is a surreal feeling. I want to thank everyone that made this possible and the University of Rhode Island for their support throughout the application process.
Saipan here I come!
